Petition for a Clean Settlement

Workers and owners deserve a clean settlement to the shuttle-pay issue

Here we are again, as co-op owners, workers, shoppers, and community members, tasked with holding management accountable for failing to live up to cooperative values.

A June mediation between management and the union led to an agreement to pay workers for their shuttle time and raise the wages of all the lowest-paid hourly workers. Both of these were most welcome. Unfortunately, management insisted on two conditions that undermine the values we all expect the co-op to embody:

• The “reassignment” of the shuttle drivers. The elimination of their jobs appears to be a cover for retaliation against the driver who was one of the most vocal, public campaigners for shuttle pay and for workers’ concerted activity rights.
• Language that looks like an attempt to curtail workers’ federal right to engage in organizing activity.

Tell general manager Rochelle Prunty and the board of directors that if the co-op is genuinely committed to improving its relationship with its workers, these troubling aspects of the agreement must be dropped. The union may have agreed to them, but management never should have asked for them.
